With over 70 different cat breeds, cats have become the most popular pets around the world. While there are many theories about the origin of the domestic cat, most people believe they were first domesticated in Ancient Egypt. Ancient Egyptians revered them as hunters as well as worshiped them. In Ancient Egypt cats were so sacred you could get the death penalty for killing a cat.

After making their way to Europe they slowly became more popular because of their hunting ability and were used to keep rodents away from food stores. The domestic cat began to spread across the world and made their way to North America with the pilgrims. Since then people have selectively breed cats to the more then 70 different cat breeds there are today.

There are two main types of cat breeds. The long haired and the short haired. Cat breeds come in a variety of shapes, sizes ,and colors all with their own unique characteristics. From no tail to a fluffy tail, round faces to flat faces, big to little, there is plenty of variety to choose from.

Some cat breeds are very popular. The Ragdoll cat was first created in the 1960’s and has quickly become very popular. They are very loyal and affectionate. Known for their docile nature they are very good with children.

The Bengal is another popular breed known for it’s wild appearance. They are a hybrid breed formed by crossing a domestic cat with a Asian Leopard. Despite this wild genetic tie they are a gentle breed after about 4 generations. They are loved for their beautiful spotted markings.

The Hymilayan is another popular cross breed. A combination of  Persian cats and Siamese cats and have the long hair of a Persian combined with the coloration of a Siamese. They are very sweet tempered and have a playful side. They love to play with just about anything.

Some less popular but no less interesting breeds include the Scottish Fold. Their characteristic folded ears give the their unique appearance. They are intelligent, playful, and loyal often becoming very attached to their owners. They easily adapt and make the ideal cat for a family with young children and other pets.

Russian Blue cats are also very unique. Their beautiful silver blue coat and wonderful personality make them highly sought after by fans of the breed. They are very intelligent and sensitive to human emotions. Because of this they often develop deep bonds with their owners. They are also very playful and vocal.
